In the context of barcode scanning technology, Non-Incendive barcode scanners refers to models that feature a Class 1 Div 2 rating. An environment that is Class 1 Div 1 rated would require an intrinsically safe barcode scanner which is also available from MSS Software but not discussed further in this article. An NI rated scanner is not rated for a Class 1 Div 1 area; therefore, a Class 1 Div 2 scanner cannot be considered an Intrinsically Safe (I-Safe) scanner.
Barcode Scanners for NI Environments
Businesses who use barcode scanners in hazardous environments understand that specialized scanners must be used. Non-Incendive, or NI, scanners are designed for use in environments rated Class 1 Div 2 by using specialized technology to prevent ignition when in contact with flammable gases or vapors. Not all barcode scanners or mobile computers can be used in a hazardous environment so this Buying Guide will help you be aware of features and various models with those features which you will need to consider as you make your buying decision.
Designed for Class 1 Div 2 Environments
Non-Incendive rated barcode scanners are typically enhanced versions of regular barcode scanners so they may be used in a hazardous environment with a Class 1 Div 2 rating. The barcode scanner’s casing has been enhanced to prevent an electro static discharged (ESD), and a special battery that is NI rated must also be used.
Keypad Selection
Most businesses buy barcode scanners such as the Zebra MC9400 or Honeywell CK67 with an alphanumeric keypad which has a dedicated button for each letter and number. More buttons means smaller buttons on the keypad which can be a challenge for users who wear gloves. Since inventory managers in the hazardous environments tend to wear gloves, our Non-Incendive customers tend to prefer the Numeric style keypad which has larger buttons. Scan Engine Selection
Standard Range vs Long Range. Handheld computers are available with various scan engines which MSS Software categorizes as either standard range or long range. Both scan engine types can scan barcodes from about 2 inches to 18 inches. However, when scanning further than 18 inches away such as when sitting in the chair of a forklift and scanning a pallet several feet away, only the long range scan engine will give you the needed performance. Honeywell and Zebra are the main providers of NI rated scanners.

There are two main models to consider when evaluating barcode scanners for use in a hazardous environment. The Honeywell CK67 and Zebra MC9400 both offer compelling features such as great scanners, durability, and most importantly the ability to operate in Class 1 Div 2 environments.
