Barcode Scanners for Freezers Buying Guide

Barcode Scanners for Freezers

Businesses who use barcode scanners in freezers and cold storage environments understand that specialized scanners must be used.  Freezer rated scanners are designed for use in cold storage environments by using specialized technology to protect the displays and batteries.  Not all barcode scanners or mobile computers can be used in a freezer so this Buying Guide will help you be aware of features and various models with those features which you will need to consider as you make your buying decision.

Designed for the Freezer

Freezer rated barcode scanners have two important features which makes them uniquely suited for use in cold temperatures.

  1. Heated display. The LCD display has liquid which can become frozen.   Barcode scanners with a freezer rating have a heating element to maintain good temperatures and prevent screen freezing.
  2. Specialized Batteries. Normal Batteries will freeze so it is important to use the right batteries which have a different chemical composition and insulation for the lower temperatures.  This is especially important to remember when buying spare or replacement batteries.

Keypad Selection

Most businesses buy barcode scanners such as the Zebra MC9400 or Honeywell CK67 with an alphanumeric keypad which has a dedicated button for each letter and number.  More buttons means smaller buttons on the keypad which can be a challenge for users who wear gloves.  Since inventory managers in the warehouse tend to wear gloves, our cold storage customers tend to prefer the Numeric style keypad which has larger buttons.  MSS Software is happy to provide demo units of both keypad styles to assist with your product selection.

Scan Engine Selection

Standard Range vs Long Range.  Handheld computers are available with various scan engines which MSS Software categorizes as either standard range or long range.  Both scan engine types can scan barcodes from about 2 inches to 18 inches.  However, when scanning further than 18 inches away such as when sitting in the chair of a forklift and scanning a pallet several feet away, only the long range scan engine will give you the needed performance. Honeywell and Zebra are the main providers of freezer rated scanners.

Models Available

There are two main models to consider when evaluating barcode scanners for use in a freezer and other cold storage environments.  The Honeywell CK67 and Zebra MC9400 both offer compelling features such as great scanners, durability, and most importantly the ability to operate in very cold temperatures.

Key features to consider when choosing one brand over the other are compatibility and user feedback. Already own equipment from one brand? It is likely you can use the same accessories  such as battery chargers for the freezer rated scanner. Have a preference on screen size and weight distribution? Choosing a model that your users are more comfortable with will drive performance and efficiency. Unsure which route to choose? MSS Software offers both.
